Qi2 has been using direct write Aerosol Jet printing to develop additive manufacturing processes for novel transducers, sensors, and electronic devices since 2009. Housed in a clean room at Quest Center, near Seattle WA, our Aerosol Jet manufacturing system is available for contract use by industry, research organizations, and universities. Supported by an array of ancillary tools and infrastructure, Qi2 offers these facilities to clients seeking to develop novel materials or needing to manufacture advanced printed electronics, sensors, and controls. Coupled with Qi2’s skills, expertise, and experience in material sciences, sensor development, and process design, Aerosol Jet printing allows a technology to move through any phase of the product lifecycle from proof-of-concept to full production.

AJ can print a wide range of inks

Qi2 is committed to expanding the reach of the AJ system through acquisition and development of innovative new inks. Most AJ inks are solvent-based, which improves adhesion to polymer substrates over inkjet. Ultrasonic and pneumatic atomization systems are available for optimum ink delivery.
AJ can print on a wide variety of substrates, rigid, flexible and non-planar
- Polymers (Mylar® and other polyesters, Kapton® and other polyimides, PET, PEN, PVDF, silicone rubber, elastomers)
The ink stream stays focused over a 1 – 8 mm working distance, allowing printing of uniform features on 3D substrates. AJ is a non-contact, non-impact process, ideal for printing on fragile substrates.
AJ technology has clear benefits over conventional fabrication methods such as photolithography, inkjet and screen printing.
- Patterns can be changed quickly for successive iterations without need for a new mask
- AJ is a three step process (clean-write-cure) as opposed to 12+ steps for photolithography
- AJ does not require an extensive cleanroom environment
- Vector tool paths provide superior accuracy, reproducibility and print quality
- Multiple printheads can be ganged together to increase productivity
- Since AJ printing is an additive, rather than an ablative process, only the material that is needed is deposited

- Cost-effective for printing high value materials such as precious metal-based inks
- AJ can print the same design multiple times, or can change a feature (e.g., a serial number) each time it prints
